Maersk's APM Terminals (APMT) has started expansion of container terminal in Port of Monrovia, Liberia, reports Maritime News, of Varna, Bulgaria.
The modernisation of the only container terminal in Liberia will double its capacity from 100,000 TEU to 200,000 TEU and will cost about US$35 million.
APMT expects the job to be completed in February 2017 and will make Freeport of Monrovia world class port to serve the West African trade lanes. The company predicts an increase of 27 per cent from terminal volume this year.
"We want to be ready, when the situation develop and to meet the demand of world trading," said company spokesman George Adjei.
Port of Monrovia is Liberia's biggest port. The main pier is 600 metres and capable for berthing three to four ships. The maximum draft of the ships operating in the port is 11 metres.
