Japan's Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) has confirmed joint shipbuilding orders with China Shipping for orders from Korea's Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co (DSME) to build three ice class LNG carriers by 2017, according to Shipping Gazette.
The ice class LNG carriers are part of an expected order of 16 for Russia's Yamal LNG project with the remaining between carriers in Russia.
This is Russia's major energy project, allowing the delivery of LNG to Europe and Asia from the gas plant in Sabetta in Yamal Peninsula, in northwestern Siberia.
Ice strengthened ships are capable of sailing in seas with 2.1 metre thick ice to move the LNG on the Northern Sea Route (NSR) between July and November.
