Container and Bulk Freight Shipping World Loses an Establishment Giant

2012-4-17

One of the true giants of the shipping industry has gone with the death today of Mærsk Mc-Kinney Moller the son of Arnold Peter Moller the founder of the A.P. Moller - Maersk Group. The Danish conglomerate blossomed in his tenure into a major force in many branches of logistics from container shipping and bulk ocean freight to energy exploration and a variety of marine services.

Mr Moller became a partner in Firmaet A.P. Moller in 1940 and remained on the board until 2003, retiring at the age of 90. Moller emigrated to the US for the duration of WW11 in order to keep control of the company fleet before returning to Denmark in 1947 where he became Chairman and CEO upon his father's death in 1965. He was instrumental in the unique deal which Maersk negotiated with the Danish Government regarding exploration and recovery of energy resources in Danish coastal waters which met criticisms that it created a monopoly.

Until his death, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Moller was the chairman of A.P. Møller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Mollers Fond til almene Formaal (The Moller Foundation), A.P. Møller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney Mollers Familiefond (The Moller Family Foundation) og Den A.P. Mollerske Stottefond, all of which have considerable shareholdings in A.P. Moller - Mærsk A/S. He remained a contributor to the last appearing in the latest Maersk Group promotional film unveiled in February in which he made clear his personal philosophy that a man's word was his bond.
