NYK officers, crew awarded Medal of Honour for rescuing balloonists

2007-11-28

Transportation group NYK has announced that Japan's red-ribbon Medal of Honour was recently awarded to the officers and crew of the "NYK Starlight" for rescuing two balloonists off the coast of Japan in January 2004.

Captain Peter Damian Misquitta, the master of the "NYK Starlight" at the time of the incident, accepted the honour on behalf of the crew at a ceremony held at Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which was followed by an audience with the Emperor of Japan.

The red-ribbon Medal of Honour is awarded to individuals who have risked their own lives to save the lives of others. In this case, the award recognised the bravery displayed by the officers and crew manning the "NYK Starlight" in rescuing two Japanese balloonists who had landed in rough seas 1,500 kilometres off the coast of Miyagi, a statement from the company explained.
