The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) said Tuesday its mandated environmental impact statement for the canal expansion project has been approved by the National Environmental Authority of Panama.
The study required the compilation of extensive data identifying and evaluating potential impacts of the expansion project, which will add a third set of locks parallel to the existing Panama Canal. The study was conducted in conjunction with San Francisco-based URS Holdings Inc., which worked with several Panamanian and international professionals and organizations to assess the impacts of the project.
"ANAM's certification of approval validates the ACP's commitment to the highest standards of environmental management and stewardship for the canal expansion project," a statement from the canal authority said.
