CHONGQING city, on the upper Yangtze, plans to invest CNY6.99 billion (US$930 million) on port expansion projects during the five-year development plan period of 2006 to 2010, which will bring an extra capacity of 80.16 million tons to the port, Xinhua reported.
During this period, Chongqing will build 102 container, bulk and automobile ro/ro berths. By 2010, the port's capacity will be raised to 146 million tons.
The city government plans to spend about CNY40 billion on water the transport industry during this period. More than CNY19 billion will be spent on dredging, CNY7.16 billion replacing old ships with newer, bigger environmentally-friendly ones. By 2010, the capacity of Chongqing's fleet will be raised to 5 million deadweight tonnes.
