Railways have earned INR 16,405.26 crores from freight volume during April-May this year as compared to INR 15,324.25 crore during the corresponding period previous year, registering an increase of 7.05%.
According to Railway Ministry data, railways carried 180.63 Million Tonnes (mt) of goods during April-May 2014 as compared to 171.84 mtcarried during the corresponding period previous year, registering an increase of 5.12%.
In May, railways earned INR 8334.09 crore from freight traffic out of which INR 3601.27 crore came from transportation of 43.96 mt of coal, followed by INR 720.10 crore from 10.42 mt of iron ore for exports, steel plants and for other domestic users.
The national transporter earned INR 818.47 crore from transportation of 10.22 mt of cement, INR 765.15 crore from 4.89 mt of foodgrains, INR 499.27 crore from 3.80 mt of petroleum oil and lubricant (POL), INR 513.88 crore from 3.30 mt of Pig iron and finished steel from steel plants and other points, INR 355.83 crore from 3.37 mt of fertilisers, INR 111.66 crore from 1.20 mt of raw material for steel plants except iron ore, INR 378.88 crore from 4.19 mt by container service and INR 569.58 crore from 6.48 mt of other goods.
