Germany's DB International, a member of Deutsche Bahn, has opened a new branch Bangalore after winning a contract to act as consultant for Kochi Metro, a 26-kilometre elevated railway.
Work on the project started in February, and will involve supplying energy with a 750 volt DC third rail.
The company said it will give DB the "opportunity to build local expertise in railway construction", the DB Schenker statement said.
Said chairman Niko Warbanoff: "DB International has the requisite global skills and reputation in project work to offer high-quality services here, too. We are confident that we can lend our support to India with our expertise in all areas of rail transport."
